What is a domain name?

Each individual computer on the Internet has a unique address called an Internet Protocol (IP) address. The Domain Name System (DNS) was created to replace the usual IP addresses (such as "232.105.X.X") with names, since they're much easier to remember. The domain name includes any name specified and an extension, also known as the top level domain (TLD).

What is a top level domain (TLD)?

TLD is the extension at the end of the domain names. The two types of TLDs are global and country. Global TLDs are created for Internet public use, for example, .com, .net, and .org. Country TLDs are created for a specific country's use, for example, .ca (for Canada), and .co.uk (for the United Kingdom).

Update: ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has just resently approved new TLDs that will be released shortly. If you would like to us to e-mail you when they are released please e-mail us.

How can a domain name help my existing web site?
Without a domain name, your web site would most likely be in the form of http://www.your-isp.com/~yourwebsite. Not only is this hard to remember, but having your own domain name is essential to your marketing efforts. Listing YourDomainName.com on your business cards, and letterhead gives your company a professional look. Having your own domain name also helps potential customers find you on search engines.

How long can my domain name be, and what characters can I use?
Domain names can be a maximum of 67 characters in length not including the www (63 characters plus the .com, .net, or .org suffix). The name you choose may contain letters, numbers, and hyphens, but no spaces or other punctuation. You may not begin or end the name with a hyphen.
